This process is done by masking the entire mold, mold inserts to ejector pins, etc. leaving only the area where the pattern is to be placed. After this process is complete the pattern is then placed on the desired area and submerged in an acid bath (see Our Process). To achieve the utmost quality of the pattern selected it must be to the correct depth. Any changes in depth from shallow to deeper can alter the appearance of the pattern selected (see design tips below). We take pride in insuring that you are receiving the pattern you have selected. St. Paul Engraving can match any Industry Standard Pattern world wide. If St. Paul Engraving doesn't have a pattern or record then a sample is all we need! Our craftsmen provide profliometer readings off each mold component of a project to insure the best possible match. MOLD TEXTURE REPAIR: When texture repair is needed SPE draws on our technicians to insure you receive the best possible match available. Every mold texture repair is different: mold configuration, steel type, texture pattern, what the damage consists of, ejector pins to parting line dings, as well as welds. It is important to call SPE prior to having anything done to insure the proper steps are taken. This can save our customers time and money! WELDING PROCEDURE: When a mold must be welded the difference in hardness, composition, and grain structure in the welded area may cause it to etch at different rates. This can cause a variation in appearance after etching when compared to the parent metal. To achieve the best match possible please call St. Paul Engraving prior to welding. Welding Aluminum is not recommended. DESIGN TIPS: The rule of thumb for draft in the texturing process is 1.5 degrees of draft for 0.001 inches of depth for proper release of the part from the mold. However with a new innovative process we can blend most texture patterns on the low draft areas for proper release. Please call for more details. Molds should have a surface finish of a SPI-C3 (320 Stone) finish or better depending on the pattern selected. Finer depth finishes like a micro finish should be a SPI-A3 (diamond buff) finish or better. All EDM scale must be removed.
